How We Help Adults Public health and prevention

Public health and prevention

Working in communities

We support local communities to prevent the harms of alcohol and other drugs.

Our organisation collaborates within local businesses, councils, schools, health organisations and universities to develop a variety of preventative strategies and initiatives.

Schoolies

Drug ARM coordinates a front line support service as part of the Gold Coast Schoolies Community Safety Response coordinated by the Queensland Government.

Throughout Schoolies Week,  Drug ARM volunteers provide brief welfare support to young people attending the activities from a Recharge Zone, ultimately being a safe chill out space for school leavers to access the many support services available including emergency services.

Research

Drug ARM has a lengthy history in research and evaluation. Recent projects include:

Schoolies Longitudinal Research Study (1999 – Present)

Drug ARM has the largest collection of research on risk taking behaviours of young people attending Schoolies Week. The study tracks trends in risk changing behaviours including alcohol and other drug use, driving under the influence, levels of substance use and other behaviours.

Advocacy

We are an active member of Local Drug Action Teams, Liquor Industry Action Groups and other local level alliances. We also contribute to policy and advocacy coalitions and peak bodies throughout our service regions.

Current memberships include the Community Council of Australia (CCA), Community Services Industry Alliance (CSIA), National Alliance for Action on Alcohol (NAAA), South Australian Network of Drug and Alcohol Services (SANDAS), Queensland Coalition for Action on Alcohol (QCAA) and Queensland Network of Alcohol and Other Drug Agencies (QNADA).
