Long history of service

We are excited to announce that this year in 2024, we celebrate 175 years of supporting people and communities to flourish free from the harms of alcohol and other drugs. With our foundation dating back to 1849, we belong to the oldest alcohol and other drug awareness, rehabilitation and management organisation in Queensland.

Our History

Celebrating our early pioneers

175 REASONS AND WAYS TO CELEBRATE

Throughout the year, we will focus on the vision, hard work and acts of generosity, kindness and innovation that have gone before us to help build and grow the organisation into what it is today. In doing so, we will seek out 175 ways to celebrate and hope as many of our supporters, clients, volunteers and team members can join with us to mark this historic milestone.

FOUNDATION DAY/MONTH

Our earliest beginnings can be traced back to the establishment of the Moreton Bay Temperance Society established on 8 May 1849, in Brisbane. As such, there will be a particular focus on celebrating on the 8 May 2024. We are also planning to hold celebratory activities and events throughout the month of May and interspersed throughout the year.

HISTORY BOOK

We are currently compiling a history of our organisation into a coffee table book with plenty of memorable moments, milestones, photos and key figures highlighted among its pages. Stay tuned for its exciting launch!

SOCIALS

Throughout our 175th year, we will post historic photos and mark many memorable moments and other key milestones in our organisation’s history. If you don’t want to miss any of these amazing flashbacks, be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn.

The Canberra Hotels

Some will remember the Canberra Hotel in Brisbane, The Canberra Motor Inn in Toowoomba and The Canberra-Oriental Hotel in Kings Cross, Sydney. This chain of hotels did not serve alcohol but were popular for accommodation and event bookings. Perhaps you stayed there or had your wedding or event in their function room? If so, you have indirectly played a part in our history, as the hotels’ revenue went towards supporting our mission – to create flourishing communities free from alcohol and other drug harms.
