Some nights on Street Outreach stay with you long after you are home

April 2, 2026

CONSISTENCY MATTERS

For people living on the margins, reaching out for support is not always easy. Past experiences of judgement, stigma, or systems that feel overwhelming can create distance between people and the help that exists. Outreach services, like Drug ARM’s Street Outreach Service, help bridge that gap by bringing support directly to the places where people already are, removing barriers and meeting immediate needs with dignity and respect.

This consistent presence matters. Outreach builds familiarity, trust, and reassurance over time, allowing people to engage at their own pace. For some, it begins with a brief conversation and a cup of coffee. For others, it can be the moment they feel safe enough to ask what support options exist. These moments form the foundation for longer‑term engagement, referral, and care.

As demand increases and conditions fluctuate, particularly during colder months, the ability to respond flexibly and compassionately becomes even more critical. During a time when it’s needed most, it is even more vital that Street Outreach Services continue to show up and that help remains within reach.

HOW SMALL ACTS OF CARE OPEN THE DOOR TO RECOVERY

A hot drink. A snack. A simple care pack.

On their own, these things might not seem like much, but on the street, late at night, they can be the beginning of something far bigger. Street outreach might be misunderstood as being about supplies, when in reality, it’s about the people. The supplies are just the catalyst that help the conversation begin.

Whilst Drug ARM’s Street Outreach services can and do meet an immediate need, they also respond to a deeper need by creating safe, supportive pathways into care for some of the most vulnerable people in our community, when they are ready.

A NIGHT THAT STUCK WITH US

A few Fridays ago, Drug ARM’s Brisbane outreach team set up at a familiar hotspot. The coffee urn was full, water containers stocked and care packs ready. The team expected a busy night, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Within minutes, it became clear how critical Drug ARM’s role was going to be that evening.

The service the team usually work alongside wasn’t able to attend, and the people who had come out were now relying solely on our van. As word spread, more people began arriving, one after another. Our staff and volunteers worked carefully to spend time with each person wherever possible, while still moving steadily so no one missed out on something as simple as a drink of water.

However, at the same time, every snack, every care pack, every drop of water had been used. So, the team weren’t able to reach the second and third stops that night, something that rarely happens. This meant that people waiting for our service at those other stops unfortunately did miss out that night.

It was a stark reminder of how much unseen need exists in our community.

By 10pm, the van was completely empty.

Why Drug ARM's Outreach is Essential

A number of the people Drug ARM encounters through Street Outreach are living with the impacts of alcohol or other drug use, often alongside mental health challenges, housing instability and social isolation. For many, there is no consistent support system around them.

In these moments, Drug ARM may be the first, and sometimes the only point of connection to help.

Drug ARM’s harm minimisation approach understands that recovery cannot be rushed and that not everyone is ready to talk about change straight away.

A study conducted in 2023 found that simply having one meaningful conversation a day with another person can boost happiness and reduce stress levels. For many people reached through Drug ARM’s Street Outreach, those small, everyday conversations are not a given, which is why outreach plays such a vital role.

Beyond words, our unconscious minds are always taking things in, sensing trust, safety and the possibility of connection. We read meaning in how someone responds to us: quiet reassurance that we are seen, that we belong and that we have value simply by being present. How close we stand, how we move alongside one another, even familiar smells are all instinctive signals that shape our sense of belonging. Through a warm drink and an unhurried conversation, Street Outreach creates the conditions for that connection to form, opening the door to trust and, in time, deeper support.

“People’s well-being is determined in large part by the quality of their social relationships, which rely heavily on conversations that they have with each other” – Michael Kardas, PhD (assistant professor of management at Oklahoma State University’s Spears School of Business)

MORE THAN A VAN

Drug ARM’s Street Outreach Service exists because everyone deserves care, connection, and a pathway to support, regardless of where they are on their journey.

You never know when the community will rely on Drug ARM or when a simple act of care will become the turning point that helps someone take their first step toward recovery.

A cup of coffee opens the door to a conversation.
A snack allows someone to pause and feel cared for.
A care pack restores a sense of dignity at a time when it’s stripped away.

This is how Drug ARM reduces harm, breaks down stigma, and creates safe, respectful spaces for people to engage.

While nights like this aren’t the norm, they remind us why readiness is essential.

KEEPING OUTREACH WITHIN ARM'S REACH

As the seasons change and the nights grow colder, the need for Drug ARM’s Street Outreach increases. Cold weather increases vulnerability, and the demand for practical support such as hot drinks, food, and care items increase.

The Street Outreach Service is only able to continue with the support and generosity of the community.

A gift of $49 towards essential supplies helps ensure our volunteers have coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and snacks to share from the outreach van at each service.

$140 towards frontline volunteer recruitment and training helps ensure our team can respond without judgement, using the skills needed to keep everyone safe while delivering outreach.

$580 helps expand Street Outreach Services into more regions, bringing a lifeline of hope and a cuppa of compassion to people who need it most, especially in identified hotspots.

Drug ARM’s staff and volunteers are ready to meet that need. But outreach can only continue if the essentials are available and the van is able to keep responding when demand spikes unexpectedly, as it did on this night.
